Q: I use WordPerfect. It is about one year old and worked fine until a few days ago, now when I click on Word Perfect the blank page that appears has a page break about 3/4 up the page up from the bottom so that when I have typed about 1/4 page it goes to the next page. This has also affected all the items in my document file so that where I use to have a one page document I now have four. I have tried to reset the bottom margin on the page set up but that does no good. I am sure that there is a command somewhere that controls this but I can't find it.

A: WordPerfect is a powerful program, and a good alternative to Microsoft Word. With that said, problems like the one that you are experiencing occur sometimes when a new printer is added to your computer. This is because the vertical and horizontal spacing and font size can be a little different on each printer.
There are two types of page breaks in WordPerfect. The first is the soft page break. This is the page break that the computer generates automatically. A soft page break is designed to adjust with the text that you enter, but it obviously isn’t working for you. The down side of soft page breaks is that you can not delete them. WordPerfect does offer you a manual override, so to speak.
You can insert a hard page break into your document. You can do this by placing the cursor where you want the page break to be, and press the “Ctrl” and “Enter” keys at the same time. If you misplace your hard page break, you have the option to delete it. You can delete them by placing the cursor at the end of the paragraph before the page break that you want to delete, and press the “Delete” key. When add or delete hard page breaks the text adjusts automatically. You should frequently check the draft view to ensure that the document appears the way that you desire. If this doesn’t work for you, you may want to uninstall WordPerfect and reinstall it. This should return the settings to default.
Q: I use Windows 2000XT and WordPerfect Version 11. I have a book manuscript with chapters in separate files. What is the procedure for numbering pages, keeping in mind the chapters are in separate files?
J. Christopher
A: You have two major options. The first option is to combine all of the chapters into one document, then number the pages afterwards. The next option may be preferable to you if combining the chapters is not a viable option. Creating a custom numbering scheme may be best in this situation. To create this you need to select Format, then Page, Numbering, and Custom Format. This option will allow you to create page numbers, chapter numbers, volume numbers, and a few other numbering options.
