Q: Here's hoping that you can help me. We have a Compaq Presario 2266 that is about 5 years old. Here is the problem that has occurred recently and persists. When I turn on the computer, there is a window that appears stating: You must be running 256 color mode or higher. You can change the color depth from the control panel display icon. I have gone to the control panel icon, clicked on 256 colors. Then it asks if I want to restart the computer. I have clicked on OK. The computer restarts and the window comes up with the same message as before. For some reason the information does not stick somewhere. Is there any help that you can give me in correcting this problem? Or should I take it in for a diagnosis/repair?
Also, we have an HP 692C printer that's hooked to the Compaq. Recently there has been a problem printing from the computer. Whenever I ask for the printer to perform, and go through all the proper procedures, the printer will sometimes just sit there as if nothing has asked it to print. This is an on again, off again, type of problem. I have to reboot the machine. Go through the process once again and it will print. Can you assist me with correcting this problem too? Rex A.
A: It seems as though you are on the right track for solving your first problem. The color depth sets the resolution level or degree of detail that can be seen in an image. The greater the resolution the more detailed an image will be. I think that all you may need to do is follow the process for setting the color depth as you have done. After you have made the necessary changes click the “Apply” button, then the “OK” button. When the computer asks you if you would like to restart your computer now, select NO. Next, you can continue to use the computer, and when you are finished you can shut your computer down in the normal manner. The next time that you restart your computer you should not have the message.
As far as your printer, I would start with reinstalling the print drivers. These can be found on the CD that came with your printer. If you do not find them there or can’t locate the CD, then you can check on the website of the printer manufacturer, HP. If that does not provide a resolution to your print problems then you may need to completely uninstall your printer and then reinstall it. You should be able to do both of these through your computers’ Control Panel. Since you say that your printer and computer are connected, then you can rule out a network issue. However, what you may need to consider is that there you may have problems with your printers electrical components. In this case, you will need to have a professional verify this for you.
