What makes a good tech gift?
I like to use a three part matrix when deciding how to select a proper tech gift. I first take where the persons is graduating from. A gift for a high school graduate should vary from that of a college graduate. Then I consider what I want to spend. Finally, I like to select items that will have some longevity. I get an idea for what I want to purchase and I go to sites like pricegrabber.com or pricewatch.com to find the best deal.
What are some of the top gifts for grads this year?
I think that there are three items that stand out from the rest. For high school graduates, I think that the Nook Color ebook reader is a great gift. Not only are most textbooks available in a PDF or ebook reader format, the Nook Color has the largest variety of formats that can be read. It can hold up to 20,000 books with an expandable microSD card of 32GB. You can read it for up to 8hrs, and it can play music and videos. Other ebook readers have longer battery life, but the Nook Color has a nice combination to benefit high school graduates and potential college students.
Another gift idea is the Kodak Zi8 HD Camcorder. This pocket sized camcorder provides multiple video and camera features. You can choose from several different recording modes varying from standard definition to, partial HD, and full HD. The quality is superior to what most cell phones can produce and it is smaller than most full size camcorders or palmcorders.
What about college graduates?
Hands down, I would say the 4G LTE MiFi mobile hotspot. This device will allow the recent graduate to have their own internet connect with 4G speed. This device is ideal for a recent graduate who is just starting out. You can gift the hardware and the monthly fee is comparable to a monthly cell phone bill. This device can serve as a home internet connection as well as a way to stay connected on the go. For a less expensive option, consider the prepaid 3G MiFi device.
