How can we use our computers to secure our homes?

The necessary minimal physical components have existed for some time. They are a computer (which can be a desktop or laptop), a webcam, an Internet connection, and monitoring software. The difference is that now the components have become more affordable, more functional, and accessible via your Smartphone.

How difficult is it to use your computer as a security system?

Setting it up use to be the most difficult part, but nowadays it has become easier. The most integral part of setting up your webcam as a security camera is the software. A software like Homecamera or Yawcam can be used to not only turn your webcam into a security camera. It also has motion detection features that can send you email updates when there is movement in a monitored area. For enhanced monitoring, you can upgrade from a webcam to a wireless camera that allows you to not only pan around an area, see in the dark, and you can also listen and speak with anyone in the area.

What if you already have a home security system?

Many home and business security systems from Alarm.com to ADT allow you to not only monitor your property but check the status of security system. If it is armed or not in addition to history functions.

Are there any other considerations?

A major consideration is the importance of an Internet connection. Also, the price ranges from no cost to about $99 per month. Needless to say, the more expensive monitoring options generally provide a higher quality performance than the no cost options, but the no cost options can be useful also.
